We at A-List have put our years of expertise into developing proprietary materials, which offer a wellspring of tips and analysis that gives students everything they need to understand the nature of the test and to conquer all its tricks and traps.
However, we also realize these explanations aren’t enough; to truly improve, students must practice our strategies and techniques on real test questions. In order to simulate the real test as closely as possible, we only give practice problems supplied by the respective tests’ creators themselves (such as the College Board, the maker of the SAT).
This practice can come in the form of homework problems assigned by your tutor, or full-length proctored tests we offer (on average) every two weeks. For the most recent locations, dates, and times, please visit our Practice Tests webpage.
Here is an outline of what you’ll need:
Students will take the PSAT in October of their Junior year. The PSAT is essentially just a shorter version of the SAT, comprised of just two Math sections, two Reading sections, and one Writing section (without the essay). All the material tested on the PSAT will also appear on the SAT, so it’s a good way to get started before moving on to the full-length SAT.
As students entering junior year start working with A-List, they will spend most of their time going through The Book of Knowledge , in order to learn our methods for the test. Once they do want to start taking practice tests, we offer actual past PSATs (purchased directly from the College Board) at proctoring sessions at no charge.
Each student is responsible for bringing his or her own test to the testing location; there will be no extra PSATs at the test site. Please make sure to coordinate your testing schedule with your tutor.
After students take the actual PSAT, they can begin to focus on the actual SAT. Students are expected to purchase these materials on their own for use in the practice tests. The College Board offers two sources of material:
- The Official SAT Study Guide (“The Blue Book”) This is a book published by the College Board containing 10 practice SAT’s with answer keys, as well as some explanatory information about the test as a whole. The list price for the book is $19.95.
- The Official SAT Online Course (“Web Tests”) This is an internet service available through Amazon and the College Board’s website . This program contains 9 additional tests not included in the Blue Book, as well as additional practice material and explanations. You can purchase the course on Amazon, or through the College Board. If purchased through College Board, you are eligible for a $10 discount on the Online Course if you already own the Blue Book or if you buy them both together.
To be eligible to take these tests, you must provide A-List with proof that you are enrolled in the Online Course. When you sign up for the Online Course, you will receive two confirmation emails from the College Board, either one of which is sufficient proof. You may give your tutor a print out of one of the emails, fax one to the A-List Office at (212) 661-0487, or forward one to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you do not provide proof of enrollment, you may not use the Web Tests.
Whether using a Blue Book test or Web Test, each student is responsible for bringing his or her own test to the testing location; there will be no extra SATs at the test site. Please make sure to coordinate your testing schedule with your tutor.
Many students now will also take the ACT. There is one source of material for the test.
- The Real ACT Prep Guide (“The Red Book”) This is a book published by the ACT Inc. containing 3 practice ACT’s with answer keys, as well as some explanatory information about the test as a whole. The list price for the book is $25.
Each student is responsible for bringing his or her own test to the testing location; there will be no extra ACTs at the test site. Please make sure to coordinate your testing schedule with your tutor.
Each Graduate Test comes with its official companion book and practice tests which we will use. Please check with your tutor about the testing schedule for each Graduate Test.

I think A-List is a great organization. My tutor was positive and tailored the material to my learning style. She made learning each subject fun and presented new topics in an engaging fashion. Thank you so much to A-List for helping me achieve my personal best!
A-List gave me more than just practice tests and test-taking tips, though these were invaluable. My tutor connected with me on a personal level and helped me understand that I was capable of getting the score I wanted. Suddenly, I viewed my test-taking experience as a challenge, not a burden. I walked into my ACT with the confidence that I knew exactly how to conquer every aspect of the test.”
Mother of Phoebe C.
Both my children had an amazing experience with A-List! Steadily, she worked hard to improve her test scores. Taking the practice tests allowed her to gain confidence and learn to manage her time during the tests. Then a college advisor helped her write her college essays. She was an amazing guide who helped Phoebe focus and streamline her supplements and essays. Now she will be attending her dream college, Rice University, School of Architecture!
