About the ACT Test:

The ACT is a US university admissions examination that consists of subject tests in English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science plus an optional essay.

    • The English section is 45 minutes long and has 75 multiple choice grammar and usage questions.
    • The Mathematics section is 60 minutes long and has 60 multiple choice math questions.
    • The Reading section is 35 minutes long and has 40 multiple choice reading comprehension questions.
    • The Science section is 35 minutes long and has 40 multiple choice data interpretation questions.
    • The Writing Section is a 30 minute optional essay which, if taken, will be combined with the English score.

You can receive a score of 1-36 on each of the four tests and the final score is the average of the four tests rounded to the nearest whole number. The overall exam is just over four hours, including short breaks, if you are writing the essay portion. All four year institutions in the United States accept the ACT.

ACT via computer-based testing (for international exams):

Last autumn, the ACT switched to computer-based testing at all international test centres. Here is some more information on the format of the exam:

  • The test itself—its content, timing and scoring scale—did not change. A-List has the strategies and tools, including an online testing platform that simulates the ACT computer-based testing experience.
  • Scrap paper is provided for students who take notes and write down calculations (as they should!)
  • The test is offered a few more times per year.
